Another Five Years of Hell! WK 7: The Evil That Men Do!

Another Five Years of Hell!

Week Seven (The Evil That Men Do!)013 (We shall not be terrorised by acts of terrorism!)

7 (WC Thurs 18/06/2015) of 260 Weeks

When I heard of the events in America at a bible study class I scrapped completely what I was going to write about as it just seemed trivial in comparison. On the evening of June 17, 2015, a mass shooting took place at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Nine people were shot and killed, including the Senior Pastor, State Senator Clementa C. Pinckney; a tenth person was shot and survived. Police arrested a suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Dylann Roof (I won’t show a picture of this murder & this is the only time I will mention his name!), in Shelby, North Carolina, the morning after the attack. He was one of those obscene racists who shamefully believed that ‘black’ people should be in slavery once again, that ‘white’ people were superior in every respect, and a civil war was needed to rid America of anyone who wasn’t ‘white’, unless they were enslaved to the ‘whites’. He wanted a war amongst the races, a war that he wanted to ignite – what an utter evil Jerk! Just writing these last two sentences made me want to puke in disgust at these white supremacists and the hatred they peddle from their narrow minded, insula, bigoted, racist, fascist, anarchistic, home grown terrorists that use anything their poor intellect can think of, and latch onto like cesspit leaches, to justify being violent. 002

Those beautiful, loving, family orientated people murdered because of their colour by this piece of pond scum sewer trash included:

  • Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd (54) – Bible study member and Manager for the Charleston County Public Library system;
  • Susie Jackson (87) – a Bible study and church choir member;
  • Ethel Lee Lance (70) – the Church Sexton;
  • Depayne Middleton-Doctor (49) – a Pastor who was also employed as a School Administrator and Admissions Coordinator at Southern Wesleyan University;
  • Clementa C. Pinckney (41) – the church Pastor and a South Carolina State Senator;
  • Tywanza Sanders (26) – a Bible study member; Nephew of Susie Jackson;
  • Daniel Simmons (74) – a Pastor who also served at Greater Zion AME Church in Awendaw;
  • Sharonda Coleman-Singleton (45) – a Pastor; also a Speech Therapist and track coach at Goose Creek High School;
  • Myra Thompson (59) – a Bible Study Teacher; 016

One further person was injured and five people escaped unharmed physically, although the act itself traumatized black America instantly. The act of racist terrorism was committed in a church that is one of the United States’ oldest black community churches, and has long been a site for community organizations focused on improving civil rights. This is exactly why it was chosen, because of its’ congregation, which are predominantly black members of the community, who work tirelessly to improve the rights of all, irrespective of colour. It was sickening that a young man, convinced that by murdering people attending a bible study group would act as a beckon to other racists to follow suit and bring back the farcical white supremacists’ rule in America, as had been the case in the Southern States pre American Civil War. Yes there are people alive in this world that think slavery was the God given right of the so called superior white person, the fact it had nothing to do with God and everything to do with evil seemed to have escaped them. They must have also forgotten:

  1. The American War of Independence so ALL people could be FREE;
  2. The American Civil War so that ALL people could be EQUAL & FREE;
  3. The abolition of slavery so ALL people were FREE & EQUAL;
  4. The American Bill of Rights so that ALL people had the same RIGHTS and be FREE;
  5. World War One where America acted to stop the dominance and suppression of people around the world so ALL could be FREE of tyranny;
  6. World War Two where America fought to stop the spread of Fascism & the Imperial Japanese brutal expansion, so the ALL people could be FREE & EQUAL & STOP GENOCIDE;
  7. That America for all its faults is based on the philosophy of FREEDOM & EQUALITY FOR ALL UNDER GOD & THE LAW019

I could continue but it is obvious what would be next on the list, a Country, a Nation, a United States of America that was enlightened enough to go from slavery to voting in its first black President in just a handful of generations, President Obama himself, showing the world America’s intention was for all to be FREE, EQUAL & ANYONE CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING IN THE USA!003 But this 21 year old wanted to set America on fire and capitalise on all he racial tension that has been bubbling away between some black communities and the authorities. He was shown proudly waving the Southern Flag and a handgun; thinking his call to arms of white supremacists would result in white dominance all over again. Yes there has been terrible tension of late, with Police brutality being a focal point of distress for many black communities, often demonstrations turning violent after yet another black person was killed during a restraint, during custody, being shot trying to flee, shot despite being unarmed, or shot in error, yes America had its problems but this is why this young man acted. Immediately Obama blamed the ease at which guns were available for such psychopathic murderers to use, siting that in other countries such gun related massacres are rare due to strict gun control. Immediately the pro-Gun Lobby stated this was an awful tragedy that could have been avoided by arming everyone, then they could have shot the young man – I THINK THEY MISSED THE BLOODY POINT! Yes having more guns is the answer – NOT! ! ! ! ! ! !

America was stunned by the loss of life and the senseless brutality of a young man that sat in a Bible & Prayer Meeting for an hour with his victims before he started shooting and reportedly shouting racist comments about whites being superior. He loaded his gun five times reports stated, even shooting dead Senator Pinckney, who was following in Obama’s historic footsteps and a leading light in the civil rights movement, as well as being a community, a state and a religious light of positivity in his community. America was holding its breath waiting for some biblical level backlash for this slaughter in the house of God, this slaughter because of the colour of people’s skin, the slaughter of beloved members of a wonderful forward thinking black community. The tension for a few hours was palpable even this side of the ‘Pond’, days of riots had occurred for far less transgressions against the dignity, the morality, the freedom and the equality of the American ‘Black’ community, which was surely going to erupt after years of growing tension? I wondered if the eruption would unleash fire of God’s own biblical level vengeance on ‘White’ supremacists, the oppressors where even a community church is not sacred, being defiled by this young man’s murderous deeds.

006Then through the growing tension, the mounting apprehension, dignified family members of those murdered gathered in front of the world’s media, this would be the ignition for the backlash! But then I/we saw021 what can only be described as a breath-taking act that will stay with me as long as I live. The families, the living victims that will bear the suffering for their lifetimes and probably that of proceeding generations, left totally bereft from this act of terrorism, stood dignified, stood together, stood calm and collected in the face of these murders. Then it happened, they asked for PRAYER not anger, they asked for PEACE not rage, they offered FORGIVENESS and not for revenge, they offer this young man and his perverted, putrid peers love and rejected their hate. These wonderful people were offering this young man compassion, kindness and again FORGIVENESS! ! ! ! ! ! An incredible, selfless, wonderful act in the true spirit of their faith, even though this was a horrendous act from home grown terrorists. This beautiful forgiveness in the face of murderous provocation took the world by surprise and quelled any wish for violence to beget violence, to take the negative road of revenge. Later there was a memorial service where President Obama spoke of forgiveness and tolerance, then completely unscripted started singing Amazing Grace, the attendees, the congregation that had been silent listening to his words all stood and joined in with his hymn. 020

These acts showed that against the deepest, swamp and sewer of festering evil, where these racist wallow in the misery they cause or threaten to cause, the response from the people they demonise and victimise would be love and forgiveness, understanding and compassion. This response sending a shard of pure, blinding light forcing the evil that this in the dead hearts of these moronic terrorist into the open, bathing their acts hate in love from those that were wronged. They also sent a clear message that acts of revenge, rioting, any aggression, was not to be done in their name, not in the name of those whose lives were taken. This butchery was only to be met with forgiveness, and this was the most beautiful Christian act I have seen demonstrated in many years. On the same day as the memorial, Obama signed into law that Gay and Lesbian people were equal under law to their heterosexual counterparts and could marry in any state in the USA, another shard of light piecing the evil that these terrorists peddle. But to me, and I am now the wrong side of 50, the reality of the relatives response was simple, that terrorism will not terrorise us, we will not be terrorised and we do forgive you for your transgression!

A beautiful legacy for us all to follow has been left and America is actually stronger for this act of butchery and the forgiveness that followed it. 018
